Writing in the Business World
Would you improve your writing skills if you knew that alone would make you more valuable to your employer? Well I read a few articles that informed me writing is very important to your employer, and I must capture more writing skills to advance my job readiness. I will write this essay paying attention to issues I face with my writing so I can have a good starting point on perfecting this skill. I was once blind to my mistakes but, the articles have opened my eyes and know I am aware of what I need to do. Know this is my new goal.
As I read the articles about business writing skills, all of the authors agreed that good writing skills are very important to employers and, lots of businesses are concerned with the writing of their employees. The businesses are finding out that because of their employees poor writing skills businesses lose money .Written messages that are not concise and self-explanatory waste production time as further questions have to be answered before doing a job(Suttle, N.D.). Writing skills in advertising must be effective in order to draw customers to products and services (Suttle, N.D.). These articles indicate emails are replacing international phone calls. So, this means writing needs to be more comprehensive and informative (Suttle, N.D.). These sources tell me that the most sought after skills are accuracy, clarity, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and conciseness (Hansen, N.D.). As these deficiencies in writing hurt the employer they also hurt the employee since 30% of the business day is spent on written communication tasks. If I want to move up in there career I need to advance their writing skills because writing is key.
The way I view my writing is with the same struggles of those with deficient writing skills . I am not meeting the required standards. I think this is because I love writing poetry and music but mostly I am my only audience. I get used to that type of writing and am most comfortable, but that writing has no rules involved so I don’t pay attention to any. When I write for school, I have to teach myself all over again. Most times I've forgotten the important rules behind professional writing. My worst problems are grammar, sentence structure, and finding correct words to communicate what I’m thinking on paper. Sometimes I make mistakes that I would have revised had I understood how or that it was a mistake. My strengths include context and verbal expression. I can organize my ideas and stay on focal point through the whole paper but, the incorrect conventions may annoy my reader.
I know that I can no longer lack these skills in my writing. In my MGT 400 class I have an opportunity to create a small business plan, and it is definitely going to require a lot of business writing. I have to possess good writing skills or my plan may never get considered. I hope for myself that one day I can catch the mistakes in my own writing. I hope to be able to obtain those hard skills of writing. I hope to master the skills that pertain to my writing deficiencies. I also want to push myself to use more resources to help me understand grammatical errors and fix the ones I am most likely to commit in an attempt to be a more effective, concise, and a comprehensive writer to my audience.

Dear: MS. Brown
I am writing to you as a mother of a student in your school. I have done research hoping to find a way that you may incorporate a tutoring program for struggling students. As a parent and a member of the neighborhood community, I am aware of how hard it can be for parents to help students practice the skills that they are learning. Many parents work fulltime, and do not have much time to help a student be prepared for state testing or strengthen general education. I also understand that the school has no program for tutoring now. I know that the student enrollment is down and funding is not available to the school. I am interested in knowing if I propose a plan to improve the children’s academic strength is the school interested in responding to the petition. The proposal does not ask for an increase in budget. I would like to submit this proposal for our discussion. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Rachael Hopson

For Elementary Students K-5
Through Fifth Grade

Problem
Some young people need extra time or support to succeed in school and develop into responsible citizens. Growing consensus in our state and nation supports the value of afterschool programs in helping young people succeed in school and in life. Recent studies and program evaluations provide convincing evidence that afterschool programs providing both academic support and youth development activities benefit students in a variety of ways. These benefits include improving their academic achievement, strengthening their social and emotional skills, enriching their understanding of society and culture, and boosting their commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
I am a parent of two bright little girls who love Bryant School. They have been at the school for one whole school year and have just started the second school year. I have a third grader and a first grader. My third grader is so excited about school she completes her home work without me even asking her. She is happy when it’s a school day. My daughter has made many friends, and is a joy to have in class. When she was in the first grade she was enrolled at Sherman Elementary School whose school had an excellent tutoring program. My child was involved in the program that the school sponsored. She went to the tutoring after school three days a week for four hours a day. I believe that this decision was one of the best decisions I have made in my daughters’ education. She was not behind in her learning or understanding. It helped her to get very good at the work she was doing in class. When she started doing so well she really began to love school and as a third grader often talked about how her college experience might be. So that’s my third grader, but my first grader is not as excited about school. She is not failing but she is struggling with her work. It has really become painful for her to do her homework and other school related projects. She has in the past hidden homework. She has been embarrassed of having to redo problems focused on math or reading comprehension. I fell like she needs something before she does fail. This is something that not only has the potential of guaranteeing her success but also something that provides new thinking about school. I know my child can get by and pass to the next grade but I want my child to have an enjoyable experience when it comes to her practicing her academic skills. If she continues this path she may not be focused towards her success in the future we have to help her, and other students like her understand that if something is difficult you don’t simply give up, you work harder at it until you’ve mastered the skill.
Solution
The solution would be then to educate parents about a tutoring program with the Boys and Girls club of greater Milwaukee. They have been around for 125 years, making them one of the oldest youth-serving agencies of their kind. Over the course of the year, they’ll serve more than 35,000 kids. They have 36 Clubs throughout the Milwaukee area, one in Waukesha and a 300-acre camp near Hartland. The Boys and Girls club offers more than 200 programs to kids, ranging from music instruction and literacy initiatives to hot meals and college preparatory classes. Their programs often fill gaps left by school-based programs that have been cut due to budgetary restrictions. They’ll work with youths from grade school through high school, and sometimes beyond. They have set a goal to be there for members from the time they carry backpacks to their transition to briefcases. They set up a program and measure the students’ success. All the parents would have to do is provide transportation for their children. The program I have in mind is called SPARK Early Literacy Program. The results continue to be impressive from the 2009-2010 school years, SPARK served 441 participants. Their reading at grade level increased dramatically from 10 percent to 51 percent. This is the program that my kindergartner joined which continues to give her an academic advantage.
This is a safe, supportive and developmentally appropriate learning environment before and after school. Families led by single parents or two parents with full-time jobs are increasingly common, resulting in less family supervision in the critical after-school hours. With more working families, more children are left unsupervised when they get home from school. In Wisconsin, more than one-third of children in working families are unsupervised in the afternoons. Nine percent of Wisconsin children in working families participate in afterschool programs, while 34 percent of children in working families are "latchkey children" with no adult supervision when they come home from school. Children left unsupervised between the hours of 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. are at greater risk of poor grades; displaying behavior problems; using drugs, alcohol, or tobacco; committing crimes and participating in other high-risk behavior. Afterschool programs help keep youth safe and help prevent them from being the victim of a crime, since juvenile crime peaks during the after-school hours.
Budget
Membership to the Clubs is $5 per year, but they never turn away kids who cannot pay. 57 percent of the kids they serve are from households with an annual income of less than $25,000. The school would only be required to suggest certain students that would benefit from the program. This would not cost the school anything but I believe if the school informs the parents of the program , then they are more likely to enroll their children. This can bring carpooling about and oneness to the community surrounding the school.
Summary
If we start looking into tutoring agencies we find that they receive a share of about approximately $5 million MPS dollars, set aside for the programs each year. They conducted extensive interviews with parents of students receiving services, and with service providers. Armed with some data, they released a report in March that said tutoring services weren't reaching as many students as they could. The money that was put into the program only benefited a handful of students. I believe it’s because the parents were never explained the benefits and opportunities’ available. If the government already spends money to support these programs parents should be highly educated of their existence. I am hoping that you set up a time to discuss the matter further and allow the programmers to answer your questions as how to inform about the program. Please contact me at 262-278-9725.
